Diet for cholesterol: Triglyceride Triglyceride is another fat in the blood. It is the simplest form of storage fat. All excess amount of oil and carbohydrates like rice, bread etc, as well as excess sugar or alcohol is converted
to triglyceride. South Indians consuming large amounts of rice are prone to having high levels of cholesterol. Among men, those from
Andhra Pradesh show a great tendency to high triglyceride as rice forms a main part of their food intake. Also, those consuming high
amounts of alcohol exhibit the same problem. Triglyceride too can be deposited on the walls of the arteries causing blocks and heart
attack. Levels above 150 are dangerous. Fat stored in the body is mostly in the form of triglyceride. triglyceride are the most common
type of fat in foods and in body fat stores.
When does triglyceride levels go up? Triglyceride are produced in the body whenever an excess amount of cals or energy comes into the blood and the level of energy is more than required for immediate use. whenever there is overeating or over drinking.
Careful Consumption of milk, cream, butter and Ghee must be stopped completely. Coconut and bakery items like pastries, cookies and pulls need to be stopped as they contain saturated fats like vanaspati, margarine etc. Only 2-3 tsp. oil, groundnut, til and saffola may be used daily Besides this, eat very little rice along with dry chapatis (Phulkas) for lunch. For dinner, eat only Phulkas and avoid rice completely. For breakfast, don't eat rich items such as Idli, pongal, lime rice etc., Use Ragi dosa, stuffed chapatis and while wheat.
Sample diet To begin with if you are overweight, you must try to reduce immediately by consuming a low fat diet and regular exercise. Secondly, you must make a special effort to reduce the total fat in the diet - reduce oil and coconut in cooking, avoid butter, Ghee etc. fried foods, rich bakery items and sweets, heavy meat preparation and all nuts. Consuming large amounts of starchy foods like rice, idlies, bread or potato should be avoided. (1-1/2 c or max 2 c of cooked rice at a time is permitted).
If you are in the habit of eating 3-4 c cooked rice at one meal, you should test your triglyceride levels. Combining rice with whole wheat chapatis or whole wheat chapatis or Ragi balls instead of rice is helpful as these have more fiber which is useful for breaking down fat in the body. Consumption of large quantities of fruits, fruit juices or sweet aerated beverages must be avoided. Avoid dried fruits like dates and raisins, as they are very high in their sugar
content. Avoid avocado, Chickoo, banana, apple, mango, custard apple , jackfruit as they have a high sugar content. Apples , pears, guavas, oranges, mosambi, papaya are safe to eat but only one at a time. Indian sweets ,ice-creams , chocolates, pastries are a combination of large amounts of sugar and fat and so be very careful about them. If your triglyceride level is above 200 don't touch
these until the level comes down.
After it has
been brought down, these maybe eaten occasionally, once or twice a week but in small quantities only. Regular alcohol consumers must test their triglyceride levels. It is high time to stop drinking or atleast restrict consumption to once or twice a week and not more than four small drinks or large at a time. One large drink on an average gives 150cals . three large drinks will give 450cals which will send your triglyceride level soaring up. One tsp. of sugar/Jaggery is = 20 cals approx. A spoon of either in coffee /tea is permitted but excessive amounts of these should not be consumed. Your diet should consist mainly of whole cereals like rice or Ragi rotis ,oats or Ragi porridge , little rice at lunch but only rotis
at night. Dhals and pulses like Channa, Rajma, Moong etc must be eaten. Sprouted pulses increase the fiber content of the diet. Plenty
of vegetables and salads and high fibre fruits like apple and mosambi are helpful . A big bowl of fresh salad every night for dinner is a tonic for triglyceride . Fibre helps to breakdown fat, so chew on it whenever you can. Don't forget our old faithful WALK. So 20 mins in the morning + 20 mins in the evening will breakdown the triglyceride and keep you fighting fit. |
